Fines for company car drivers show sharp increase

Businesses faced a sharp rise in motoring fines in 2016 as the number of penalties incurred by company car and van drivers rose 21% year-on-year, according to annual figures from Lex Autolease. The research, compiled from 353,000 company vehicles in operation across the UK, revealed drivers racked up a £14 million bill last year, an increase of more than a quarter on 2015.

Fleets could face a hike in MOT fees to help pay £2 million a year towards the cost of targeting unsafe vans by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). Currently, enforcement action is paid for out of general taxation, but the Department for Transport (DfT) has recommended that van operators should pick up the tab instead.
